Nigerian music has indeed come a long way from what it used to be about 10 years ago. A lot has changed in Naija music from 2008 to the present day. Some Nigerian songs that used to gain a lot of buzz some 10 years ago rarely get played again over the radio airwaves or TV.
On the flip side, some of the Nigerian musicians that were the brightest acts then are no longer in vogue while others are merely riding on past glory and a good image with the media. The music production on the latest Nigerian songs is way more supersonic than what we heard about a decade back.
Briefly, with this post, we would highlight top classic Nigerian music from 2008 that still rock 10 years later.
D’banj – Gbono Feli Feli
Back in 2008, Nigerian musician D’banj was the man with one of the hottest songs at the time, back then with the Mo’Hits family. The Kokomaster had the music industry on lockdown with his debut hit ‘Tongolo’ and kept it up with songs like ‘Gbono Feli Feli‘ which the Nigerian fans loved. Although this song is a decade old, it still bangs anything anywhere it’s being played in Naija.
Faze – Originality
Nigerian singer Faze was a pretty hot star about a decade ago when his song ‘Originality’ was causing maximum damage on the airwaves. The song ‘Originality‘ was one of the standout music from his sophomore solo album of the same title. Without a doubt, the tune was popular on the streets and people easily sang along when it was played. The rhythms, the rhymes, the flows on this track was on point. This is one of those Naija songs that remind you how good an artiste Faze is.
J. Martins – Cool Temper
‘Cool Temper‘ is a huge Nigerian classic from 2008 by singer J. Martins. These days the highlife singer is scarcely on the music scene anymore but he made a huge impact back in the day. Everything about ‘Cool Temper’ is spot on, from the lyrics, the production, widespread etc. Anytime this tune comes on these days I make sure I listen to the end because we rarely hear something as good and mainstream like this now on the airwaves.
Nigga Raw – Ko Gbadun ft. Duncan Mighty
Okechukwu Edwards Ukeje better known as Nigga Raw now referred to as Mr. Raw had his heyday as a pioneer Igbo hip hop star. One of his evergreen songs is ‘Ko Gbadun‘ a conscious yet groovy tune which sounds very relevant up till today when we consider the state of Nigeria now. Nigga Raw teamed up with the sensational Duncan Mighty for this classic Nigerian song.
Naeto C – Kini Big Deal ft. Ikechukwu
10 years ago, Naeto C dropped one of the hottest hip hop records in Naija titled ‘Kini Big Deal‘. It was a game changer for the Nigerian rapper, that song altered the way emerging Nigerian rappers saw rap music. Released under his then record label Storm Records, Naeto C also featured Ikechukwu. If you aren’t so young, you would know these guys were next to the sun, they were very hot back in 2008.
J Martins – Good Or Bad ft. P Square & Timaya
Once again Nigerian music has come a long way from 2008, ‘Good Or Bad‘ is really different from the latest Naija songs you hear these days. J. Martins was the man that year too, this was one of his baddest records kudos to the featured acts, former P Square (they’re no more now) and Timaya. This record popped big time on the streets, it was a big sing along. It still rocks 10 years later.
M.I – Safe ft. DJinee
M.I made a statement with his sensational hip hop tune ‘Safe‘. The rapper, born Jude Abaga, totally wowed the Nigerian music market with his fresh talent some ten years back with that track ‘Safe’. This is when the Chocolate City boss started earning his medals as a veteran of Naija hip hop. And big ups to DJinee for killing his verse on the track it couldn’t be better.
D’banj – Fall In Love
The Kokomaster gave it to fans hot hot in 2008, one of his best works is ‘Fall In Love‘. And up till today, ‘Fall In Love’ is still the perfect song to be played at a wedding party. The single itself was getting massive airplay on radio and the video featured the amazing actress Genevieve and we all loved the chemistry. The song was part of his album the ‘Entertainer‘, it was nominated for MTV Africa Music Award for Song of the Year.
9ice – Gongo Aso
Next on the list is the evergreen Nigerian song ‘Gongo Aso‘ released in 2008. A sad thing to say but a valid truth, 9ice had his best music year about a decade ago thanks to his song ‘Gongo Aso’. From the North, South, East, and West this song was jamming big time. 9ice traveled the world, won awards on the heels of this tune because it was massive, the Yoruba in the lyrics didn’t stop fans from singing along.
9ice – Street Credibility
What could be better, a prime 9ice and equally hot veteran Nigerian artiste 2Face (2Baba) coming together to make music. Besides ‘Gongo Aso’ another blazing hot tune from 9ice that year was ‘Street Credibility‘. The song was part of his 2008 album ‘Gongo Aso’.
Banky W – Ebute Metta
EME boss Banky W made an instant banger when he dropped ‘Ebute Metta‘. The singer got massive love after his very unique and Lagos-centric version of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ became a massive hit record. The song did not only rock Lagos but it gained wide acceptance in other parts of Nigeria.
10 years after some of these Naija artistes aren’t as hot as they were in the past. Then again the music of yesteryears in terms of lyrics, beats etc., greatly differ from the latest Naija music we consume presently.
Do you think some of your favourite Naija songs from a decade ago was omitted? Kindly mention them in the comment section. Thank you!
